ACT 1, SCENE 1-2
1) It is in the ancient Italy and the is the medieval time. There is a ranking system of princes and princesses due to the wealth. They seem to be friendly with each other.
2) Antonio is a merchant whose business is not doing well. As a result, not being able to provide Bassanio a loan he asks for. He is worried about his own business.
3) Bassanio asks for a loan from Antonio because he wants to impress the princess, Portia.
4) In Portia's perspective, she decides to remain neutral and not decide on a husband just yet.
ACT 1, SCENE 3
1) Portia is unable to find a man suitable for herself because of her father's will. This will told Portia that she must choose from 3 chests.
2) Shylock is a jew that Bassanio is asking money from. His character's importance is that he is the one that is able to give the 3000 coins loan to Bassanio.
3) In agreement between Antonio and Shylock, they agree that Shylock will give the loan and if Antonio cannot repay in 3 months, shylock will get human flesh.
4) Shylock is hesitant for the agreement because he does not trust Antonio's business. He thinks that the business is really risky right now. Additionally, their history was conflicting as well. They have two different religions, being a jew and being a christian. Even with this tension, there had been incidents of Antonio spitting and kicking Shylock. Thus calling him a dog. As a result, as they were making the agreement, their past soon influenced their decisions.
5) I would trust Antonio because of his friendship with others. His good reputation of keeping his word and doing such things to his friend such as giving out a loan without an interest. With these proofs, it shows that Antonio is a good man. However, his business is a risky one.
REFLECTION
I believe that people often say that friends do not make good business partners because friendship can often cloud peoples judgment. It also risks your relatuonship with that person as well. As a result, I think that the deal between Antonio ans Shylock is good because they will be more encouraged to keep their word and they know that there will be no mercy.
